Finkielstein, an associate professor of biological sciences in the College of Science and an award-winning cancer researcher, anticipated the limitations of existing methods for testing the novel coronavirus and enlisted a team to develop an innovative method that would more accurately, reliably, and rapidly detect the virus and help mitigate its spread.

Engineering a better lab experience

Assistant Professor of Practice Kevin Young spent summer 2020 applying his 11 years of professional engineering experience and nine years as an instructor to rework the lab component of his Civil and Environmental Engineering 2814 course. The result? A comprehensive revision and the development of a lab safety policy that Virginia Tech’s Environmental Health and Safety team approved immediately, complimenting its detail and thoroughness.

Although the plans we present here will continue to evolve over the summer with additional input and data, significant elements are firm, and it is now time for our students, faculty, and staff to shift from planning to preparation.
