J. Mark Sowers Distinguished Lecture Series continues online with Nobel Prize winning physicist, Donna Strickland

The online event on March 10 will feature Strickland, who is a professor with the University of Waterloo’s Department of Physics and Astronomy. She co-won the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics for her work in developing chirped pulse laser amplification with Gérard Mourou, her Ph.D. supervisor at the time.

In a new review published in Science, Dana Hawley, a professor of biological sciences in the Virginia Tech College of Science, and a team of scientists have highlighted some non-human species that have intuitively practiced social distancing when one of their own became sick - long before humans learned about and started “social distancing due to COVID-19."

Although the plans we present here will continue to evolve over the summer with additional input and data, significant elements are firm, and it is now time for our students, faculty, and staff to shift from planning to preparation.
